TOPIC: “When All the World’s Problems are Solved, is Optimism Still Necessary?”
WHAT: The Essay Contest is sponsored by Optimist International to give young people the opportunity to write about their own opinions regarding the world in which they live. The approach can encompass a young person’s personal experience, the experience of their country or a more historical perspective. In additional to developing skills for written expression, participants also have an opportunity to win a college scholarship!
WHO: Youth under the age of 19 as of October 1, 2018 (and not enrolled as a degree seeking student of a post-secondary institution) in the United States, Canada or the Caribbean. There is no minimum age or gender restriction (only one contest will be held).
WHEN: The deadline to submit your entry is January 31, 2019. Judging will take place and the winning essay submitted to the district level by February 28, 2019. Entrants will be notified of their status by early March 2019.
AWARDS: Winners in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place receive medallions and awards: 1st Place $250, 2nd Place $150, and 3rd Place $100. The club winner will advance to the District contest to compete for a $2,500 college scholarship.
HOW TO ENTER: Mail or email your essay along with a completed application form and proof of age (copy of passport or birth certificate) to the Contest Chair. Entries must be emailed or postmarked on or before midnight January 31, 2019.
