The Optimist Club News

We delivered 400 Christmas themed Treasure Bags, 100 Elves, 100 Pocket Blankets, 40 Christmas Hats, and 600 Beanie Babies to Rady Children's Hospital. We also delivered 50 Baby Blankets, 60 Hat and Bootiesets, to Palomar Hospital Pediatric ward which is operated by Rady.

Extra special thanks, appreciation, and gratitude to the following Optimist Clubs for their support: Carlsbad, Del Mar - Solana Beach, El Cajon, Oceanside, and Valley Center.

What a difference each of you are making for the children. The world is a better place because of you.

Two ladies (both RN's) drove down from Corona to deliver 90 Christmas Treasure Bags to me. They and a group of their friends got together to make the bags in HONOR of a 6 year old boy who is the nephew of one of the ladies, He has battled brain cancer. He was in treatment at Rady for over 2 1/2 years and went into remission. Sadly the cancer has returned and he had to have one eye removed, he is again in treatment. The day of the delivery I told one of the Rady Executives the story and asked her to make sure the he got a Christmas Treasure Bag, and a pair of elves. As luck would have it the Child Life Specialist who takes care of him was present at the delivery, she promised the family would be notified of the Treasure Bags made by the ladies in honor of their child, and that she would personally present the young boy with his Treasure Bag and Elves. By the way the ladies learned about Covers With Love when they picked up a brochure in one of the Quilt shops.

As you celebrate the wonderful season, please keep the children in your heart, and in your prayers.

Blessings to you, and your family, and best wishes for a Healthy and Happy New Year.

Thank you for your kindness and generosity,
~ Audrey

Torrey Pines Friendly Falcons

On October 30, 2013 a new Junior Optimist Octagon International (JOOI) Club was chartered at Torrey Pines High School. The new JOOI Club, the Torrey Pines Friendly Falcons, is sponsored by the Del Mar - Solana Beach Optimist Club. The initial charter membership of this JOOI Club was 24 students.

The Torrey Pines Friendly Falcons JOOI Club Adviser is Gwen Robinson, a newer member of the sponsoring Del Mar - Solana Beach Optimist Club. Gwen has been meeting regularly with the Torrey Pines Friendly Falcons to help with their organizational and club planning activities. JOOI Club Members participated in Avielle's Carnival during October. The Carnival was a fund raising activity benefiting the Avielle Foundation for brain health research.

The Club is planning community service activities focusing on helping the needy during the holiday seasons and beyond.

Hello Fellow Optimists:
First, in review, stepping up to the podium at the March Dinner Meeting to receive their "Oscars for Outstanding Performances" were: Lorine Wright - thank you for the great job publishing articles in the local papers regarding activities of our Club, Penny Pease - another super job with the Oratorical Contest, Jon Vance - Chairing another successful Essay Contest (and, we have enjoyed having the winners read their Essay's at our Breakfast Meetings), and Jim Parrotte - for all the work he is doing with our new JOOI Club, the Canyon Crest Ravens. Our Dinner Meetings at Lomas Santa Fe Country Club have been fun, good food (thank you Audrey Eller for the variety, and menu selection), and entertaining (thank you Jon Vance for arranging good Speakers). They also provide an excellent opportunity to meet, and socialize, with our Club Members. I hope you all had a chance to meet one of our newest Members, Maria Bagby, at the March Dinner Meeting. Please be sure to "mark your calendars" for the upcoming Dinner Meetings: May 15th - Speaker will be Joe Kellejian with some interesting highlights of his past twenty plus years in Solana Beach "politics", and public service, June 19th - Joe Harper, President of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, will give us a preview of the 2013 Racing Season, and some antidotes from the past activates at the Track, and on July 17th we will hear from Dan McAllister on where our money goes (maybe)!
I hope that you all will be attending the big event on April 19th - "It's a Fiesta" - to help us raise funds for the Optimist District Childhood Cancer Campaign. Other upcoming events are: May 18th - Miracle League Volunteer Day at the Little League Ball Park, and May 22nd – Children’s Challenge awards program at Lomas Santa Fe Country Club.
Your Optimist Club of Del Mar/Solana Beach provides many ways for you to get involved in serving the youth of our Community, be better informed as to activities in our area, and to give of ourselves to the service of others. I hope that you all are taking advantage of all the benefits of our Club.
Thank You for your support.

Message from President Dave

Hello Fellow Optimists,
As we move into Spring, our Calendar of Optimist Events "heats up" (as does the weather - I hope!). Please be aware of the following Events, and Dates: March 2nd - Cub Scout Blue and Gold Dinner at the St. James Church in Solana Beach beginning at 5:30 pm, March 9th - Oratorical Contest at Calvary Church in Solana Beach beginning at 9:00 am, Essay Contest entries due - contact Jon Vance, March 20th - Dinner Meeting at Lomas Santa Fe Country Club with an interesting Speaker to tell us about Internet Safety, and "hackers"!, Note that we will not be having a Dinner Meeting in April, rather a "Fiesta Fund Raiser" at Lomas Santa Fe Country Club to benefit the Optimist District Childhood Cancer Campaign on April 19th, May 15th - our Dinner Meeting Speaker will be Joe Kellejian, and on May 18th we have scheduled the Miracle League "Optimist Volunteer Day".
I hope that you have all had a chance to meet our newest Member - Louis Verhog. He, and wife Judy, attended the Dinner Meeting on February 20th, and got to meet many of you in addition to hearing an outstanding presentation on the Optimist Childhood Cancer Campaign given by Audrey Eller. We also welcomed Michael Wexler as a Guest, and hope that he will be joining our Club soon.
Our January Dinner Meeting was attended by forty (40) Members and Guests as we enjoyed hearing from John Lynch, Vice Chairman and CEO of the UT. Thank You Jon Vance for arranging this Speaker. I hope that all Members will make that little "extra effort" to attend the Dinner Meetings, as well as our regular Breakfast Meetings, as we do have fun together!!
Our Optimist Club of Del Mar-Solana Beach is active, and growing. We will be planning some great projects, and events, as we approach Summer - stay tuned. Thank You, all, for your participation
and support.
