2017 CCA DFS Optimist Club Scholarships Awarded

It was a great honor to present the Del Mar - Solana Beach Optimist Club Scholarships at the Canyon Crest Academy Dollars For Scholars Award Ceremony on Monday evening, May 15, 2017 at the school's Proscenium Theater on campus. This year there were 44 scholarships presented to winners from 178 applicants - less than 25% of applicants receiving awards. The two Del Mar - Solana Beach Optimist Club Scholarships were presented to very deserving young men.

The first 2017 Del Mar - Solana Beach Optimist Club Scholarship winner is Noah Jacobson. Noah joined the Canyon Crest Academy Junior Optimist Club in 2015 and is graduating in June 2017. He plans to attend Stanford University in Palo Alto in the Fall.

Noah has devoted himself to feeding the hungry. As the Chair of the Hands Up Food Pantry and Founder of the CCA Hunger Awareness club, he has helped to collect 5000 pounds of food and lobbied to alleviate hunger at the California legislature. His achievements in fighting hunger have been recognized with Certificates of Recognition from the City of San Diego and the California Legislative Assembly.

In addition to his work in fighting hunger, Noah conducts research and writes analytical software to study plasma physics at the Plasma Interaction Surface Component Experimental Station. He has also served as a leader for two of CCA’s robotics teams, sharing his expertise in marketing, documentation, outreach, and mechanical design.

Noah has earned his Gold Level Presidential Service Award for the past 3 years and is a National AP Scholar.

The second 2017 Del Mar - Solana Beach Optimist Club Scholarship winner is Nathan Parikh. Nathan plans to attend Duke University in the Fall.

Nathan is an exemplary Boy Scout, serving as his troop’s senior patrol leader and earning his Eagle rank with a fence restoration project at the Torrey Pines State Reserve.

He is the founder and president of the CCA Sports Fanatics club where he has connected sports enthusiasts with philanthropy by combining athletic events with canned food collection for the San Diego Food Bank. The Sports Fanatics have also organized collection of used sports equipment.

Nathan plays tennis for a competitive club and at CCA. He has been recognized for his team leadership skills and serves as a member of the CCA Student Athlete council.

On the Varsity Public Forum Debate Team for 4 years, Nathan was an Octo-finalist at the Jack Howe Memorial Tournament in 2016, earned an 8th place at the 2016 National Qualifications, and 8th place at the 2015 State Qualifications.

He has served our community as a summer intern and school year volunteer for Assemblyman Brian Maienschein. Currently, he interns at UCSD, studying tissue remodeling in a type of allergic esophagitis.

The winner of a prestigious Canyon Crest Academy Dollars For Scholars Distinguished Scholar Award, presented by the school's Principal, is Aaron Tanaka. Aaron is the current Secretary of the Canyon Crest Academy Junior Optimist Club and has been a club member since ninth grade. Aaron was presented his award for being an outstanding student in academics and for his numerous and far reaching community service activities in the Junior Optimist Club, Teen Volunteers In Action, and his efforts for traffic safety improvements around the school area. Aaron also has reached out internationally with his efforts while maintaining an outstanding academic record. Aaron plans to attend Macalester College and major in Political Science.
